”If you speak, they will give Antonio 20 years in prison”, Maribel Espaillat would have said to a Jet Set employee

Santo Domingo.- The Public Ministry accuses Maribel Espaillat of attempting to obstruct investigations into the collapse of the roof at the Jet Set Club, a tragedy that claimed the lives of 236 people. According to the request for coercive measures, the accused allegedly had a conversation with Mr. Gregorio Adames Arias, a technician involved in the maintenance of the establishment, in an apparent attempt to influence his testimony. According to the record, the meeting took place on April 14, six days after the collapse. In that meeting, Maribel Espaillat questioned Adames about what he knew about the state of the premises, warning him that any compromising statement could lead to a 20-year sentence for his brother, also accused Antonio Espaillat.

The prosecution maintains that this act constitutes a form of undue pressure against a possible key witness in the judicial process. Furthermore, it qualifies it as an indication that the accused could interfere with the development of the investigation if a restrictive coercive measure is not imposed on her. The Public Ministry has requested preventive detention for Maribel Espaillat, arguing the seriousness of the case, the risk of flight, and the possibility of obstructing the judicial process.
