After the end of regulation time with a 0-0 tie, Tage Thompson scored in the 2:02 minute of overtime the golden goal that gave the United States the 1-0 victory over Switzerland and the gold medal in the World Championship in Sweden and Denmark, the first for the country since 1933.
The United States won the title that year and has since had to wait to sign the second. In 1960, a year without a World Cup, it won the Olympic title as host in the Squaw Valley Games.

Sweden took the bronze after defeating the other host, Denmark, in the consolation final by 6-2.
