TORONTO.- — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander hit home runs, while Chris Bassitt led a solid pitching performance for the Toronto Blue Jays to defeat the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Tuesday night, taking the first game of the series at the Rogers Centre.

Guerrero opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, his sixth of the season, sending the ball to left field with authority. Santander extended the lead in the fifth act with a two-run hit, also his sixth home run of the year.
Right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-2) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. He was backed by three relievers: Brendon Little, Yariel Rodríguez, and Jeff Hoffman, who earned his tenth save of the season in twelve opportunities.
It was the first shutout of the year for Toronto, while the Padres were shut out for the third time this season and extended their losing streak to four, matching their worst losing streak of the year.
For San Diego, starter Dylan Cease (1-3) delivered a solid seven-inning performance, allowing only three hits —the two home runs and a single—, but again lacked offensive support. The right-hander hasn't won since April 2, despite allowing three or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts.
Toronto capitalized on every opportunity and powerfully supported the pitching, in a game where defense and efficiency from the mound made the difference.
