Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has stated in an interview given to the German newspaper Bild, before traveling to Canada to participate in the G7 summit, that he fears that Russia is "lying" to the president of USA, Donald Trump, about its true intentions regarding the war.
"I think Russia is lying to Trump, that's my opinion, and most heads of state and government share my opinion," said Zelensky, who hopes to meet with the US president at the summit to continue trying to convince him to enact punitive economic measures against Russia to force it to declare the ceasefire requested by Kyiv and its partners and which Washington has also unsuccessfully demanded.
The publication of Zelensky's interview with Bild coincides with the congratulations to the Russians from the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on the occasion of Russia Day, in a new symbolic step towards the normalization of relations between Washington and Moscow despite the lack of willingness that Russian President Vladimir Putin is showing to end the war as Trump asks him.
Zelensky declared to the German newspaper that Trump "can achieve a ceasefire" by approving new, more forceful sanctions against Russia, such as those proposed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who is ready to submit to a vote a bill that provides for the introduction of tariffs on exports to the US from all those countries that buy Russian oil and other natural resources.
"Putin understands nothing but force, and the US has this force. I think it would be right to use this force," hammered the Ukrainian president.
