Washington.- The Government of the United States announced this Thursday the arrest of the well-known Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., whom it accuses of having links with the Sinaloa Cartel, and confirmed that it is preparing his deportation.
"This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate, with an outstanding arrest warrant for trafficking in weapons, ammunition, and explosives, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)", said the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Tricia McLaughlin, in a statement.

Chávez Jr., who had a high-level fight with American boxer Jake Paul in Los Angeles (California) over the weekend, was arrested yesterday, Wednesday, in the city of Studio City (California), revealed the DHS. "Under the Trump presidency, no one is above the law, not even world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliate in the United States is clear: we will find them and they will face the consequences. The days of rampant cartel violence are over," McLaughlin added. According to the DHS statement, Chávez Jr. has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and arms trafficking. "Chávez is also believed to be affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel," the text adds. This criminal entity has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the administration of President Donald Trump. The well-known boxer legally entered the U.S. in August 2023 with a tourist visa valid until February 2024. Two months after his visa expired, Chávez Jr. applied for permanent residency in the country. "His request was based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen, linked to the Sinaloa Cartel through a previous relationship with the deceased son of the well-known cartel leader, Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán," specified the DHS. In December 2024, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services declared him "a serious threat to public safety," although it was later determined that his case was not a priority. However, "after multiple fraudulent statements in his application to become a lawful permanent resident, it was determined that he was in the country illegally and could be deported on June 27, 2025," the statement says.
