Colombia.- In an address broadcast this Sunday, President Gustavo Petro called on Colombian society to protect the under 15-year-old identified as the perpetrator of the attack that seriously injured Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay.
“The victim's life is in good hands, and the life of the killer, who is a child… the State's first responsibility is to care for the minor's life, because he is a child. Even if it seems terrible to us… if we don't do it, we will have no homeland. The supreme good of the nation is peace,” Petro expressed.

The president reaffirmed that the priority is to guarantee the legal and physical protection of the adolescent, as well as to ensure due process and that he provides information about possible intellectual authors of the attack. According to Petro, “he is going to give the names”, referring to the statements he would have made when captured. Furthermore, he emphasized that all actions of the State should focus on preserving the life of Senator Uribe, his recovery, and clarifying the attack, without falling into hate speech or political vendettas.The presidential message was delivered amid national shock over the assassination attempt, which left the politician in critical condition after being shot in the head and chest while leading a campaign event in Bogotá.
