Diario Libre: History of the First Free Newspaper of the Dominican Republic

Diario Libre was born on May 10 of 2001, marking a before and after in the history of Dominican journalism. It was the first free newspaper in the country and also the first in the world to be delivered to the home at no cost to the reader.

Founded by the entrepreneur Arturo Pellerano, this innovative business model represented a great challenge in a market dominated by traditional newspapers. Its launch was a historic event, with the presence of three winners of the Nobel Peace Prize:

  • Lech Walesa (Poland)
  • Mikhail Gorbachev (Russia)
  • Óscar Arias (Costa Rica)

In fact, the newspaper's first front page featured an exclusive interview with Lech Walesa, whose headline read: "Fidel only has to shoot himself".

Since its inception, the newspaper has been committed to independent, truthful, and high-quality journalism, quickly establishing itself as the favorite media outlet of Dominicans.

Expansion and digital transformation of the newspaper Diario Libre

Over the years, Diario Libre evolved from a printed newspaper to a leading multimedia platform. In 2002, it launched its web portal www.diariolibre.com, expanding its reach to the digital environment.

In 2009, he introduced Diario Libre Metro, a more compact edition aimed at public transport users in Santo Domingo.

Today, Diario Libre is the content company most followed by Dominicans, both inside and outside the country, thanks to its presence in:

  • Social media (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok)
  • Podcast and informative videos
  • Daily newsletter with the main news
  • Premium platform Diario Libre Plus

Its focus on technology, creativity, and innovation has allowed it to offer quality information in various formats.
