Netflix releases this Friday at 4:00 PM Korean Standard Time (7:00 GMT) the final season of Squid Game, consisting of six episodes that promise to recapture the tone of the first installment and close the story with a "demented" ending, according to its director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
During the presentation of the series in London, last June 13, Hwang assured that this latest installment marks the definitive end of a project that has occupied six years of his life. "I never imagined this level of success. It's time to say goodbye," he expressed to the media. However, in a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, actor Lee Byung-hun, who plays Front Man, left open the possibility of future stories. “I'm not sure, but there's a possibility. You never know what could happen,” he said when asked about a possible spin-off of his character. You can also read: The ending of Squid Game could be a new beginning
The new season will show a confrontation between Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, and Front Man, focusing on their beliefs about humanity. Hwang explained at a press conference earlier this month in Seoul that the goal is to consider whether human beings can build a better world. In London, Lee Jung-jae expressed his emotion when remembering the cultural impact of the series. "I will never forget the responses from the global audience. Until the day I die", he stated. With 192.6 million viewers, the second season of Squid Game ranked as the third most popular in Netflix history, behind Wednesday and the first season of the same South Korean series.
