Saharan dust limits rainfall, but local showers are expected

Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Republic Meteorological Institute (INDOMET) reported on Tuesday that an anticyclonic circulation and the presence of dust particles from the Sahara continue to affect the national territory, significantly reducing rainfall over a large part of the country.

Despite these dry conditions, INDOMET forecasts some local showers with possible isolated thunderstorms and wind gusts during the afternoon and early evening. The rains would concentrate in mountainous and inland areas, such as Dajabón, San Juan, Santiago Rodríguez, Monte Plata, La Vega, Peravia and other provinces.

Temperatures will remain hot due to the combination of Saharan dust and warm wind flow. The population is advised to avoid sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., as well as wear light clothing and stay hydrated.

In the Caribbean Sea, conditions will be dangerous offshore, so small and fragile vessels are advised to remain in port, especially on the south coast of the country, where the waves will be more intense.

Finally, ONAMET reported a non-tropical low-pressure area southeast of the United States, with a 10% probability of cyclonic development in the next seven days. Although it does not pose a threat to the Dominican Republic, it is reminded that the 2025 hurricane season could be more active than normal, with up to 19 tropical storms and up to 5 intense hurricanes.
