Raging fire consumes part of Merca Santo Domingo; firefighters try to extinguish the flames

Santo Domingo, D.R. – A large-scale fire was recorded this Sunday at the facilities of Merca Santo Domingo, one of the main agro-food distribution centers in the country, generating alarm among merchants, employees, and residents of nearby areas. The fire considerably affects the area of the Mercado Modelo, where dozens of businesses operate. So far, the causes of the incident have not been determined. Teams from the Santo Domingo Oeste Fire Department are working intensely on control efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to other areas of the complex.

Witnesses report that the fire generated columns of smoke visible from different points of the city, which caused concern on social media, where multiple images and videos reflecting the magnitude of the event have been shared.

The Merca Santo Domingo represents a fundamental link in the supply chain of agricultural products for Greater Santo Domingo and surrounding regions. Experts warn that the incident could cause delays in supply and affect commercial logistics in the coming days.
