Santo Domingo. – Ezri Hajiune, the young American citizen who died in the Vacacional de Haina, suffered from a complex medical condition that included severe autism, asthma, and severe allergies, according to documents written by herself.
The notes that he wrote before Magistrate Wilma Cuello García, in the Second Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the Judicial District of San Cristóbal, written in English, show that Ezri warned that his medical condition was not being adequately addressed.
"I have a very serious allergy that can kill me, like a peanut or milk allergy," she wrote.
He also claimed to have "an autoimmune disease" and that he needed to use an inhaler for asthma.
In addition to his physical vulnerability, Ezri was noted to have an autism spectrum disorder.
"I have severe autism with serious symptoms," she wrote, and warned that she could not communicate with American personnel, whom she accused of having mistreated her in the past.
Her lawyer, Carlos Sánchez, denounced that Ezri was deprived of her freedom in completely inadequate conditions for a person with her clinical profile.
"She was locked up with men, without medical or psychological attention, without shelter and without access to essential medications. She was in a state of crisis, and no one intervened in time," she stated.
The hearing, held on May 19, concluded with a ruling that obliged the General Directorate of Migration to guarantee immediate medical attention to Ezri and other detainees. However, a month later, the young woman was found dead.
According to the General Directorate of Migration, Ezri passed away on June 23rd while being prepared for a routine medical examination. They assure that she showed no visible signs of violence and that the corresponding forensic and diplomatic authorities were notified. Her body is undergoing an autopsy at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF).
