Santo Domingo.– Dominican Republic presented its candidacy to be one of the 48 member states of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the United Nations Organization (UN) for the period 2027-2030, with the aim of promoting the formulation of standards for telecommunications, the use of digital technologies and the eradication of multidimensional poverty.
The candidacy presented by the Deputy Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy, Rubén Silié, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs Roberto Álvarez, and the president of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL), Guido Gómez Mazara, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirms the country's commitment to effective social development, the strengthening of innovation and sustainability in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). At the same time, it expresses the national interest in achieving universal connectivity, maintaining the proper management of the radio spectrum and the development of technical standards.
Obtaining the candidacy will consolidate the Dominican Republic's position as a regional leader in telecommunications, given that it has a presence in the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of American States (OAS); holds the vice presidency of the Latin American Forum of Telecommunications Regulatory Bodies (REGULATEL) and would be holding the presidency of that organization in 2026.
“We have taken on this candidacy with the support of INDOTEL, to continue highlighting the country's progress, placing it at the forefront of the digital world and the age of artificial intelligence, to continue being a model of growth and development in the region and to present our positions firmly to other nations, always from an approach of dialogue and cooperation. As a government, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, transformation, and global digital governance and sustainable development through information and communication technologies,” said Vice Minister Silié.
The diplomat valued that under the leadership of President Luis Abinader, the country has promoted the Digital Agenda 2030, which articulates proposals and public policies focused on inclusion and sustainability, to promote the digital transformation of the State and society, and advocate for equal access to information and communication technologies (ICT) to become the engine of human development.
For his part, the president of INDOTEL, Guido Gómez Mazara, pointed out that being part of the ITU Council is not only an institutional honor, but also a strategic opportunity to strengthen the country's participation in defining the standards that will guide the future of telecommunications, and that it also represents a platform to support the leadership of this organization in promoting digital transformation.
The telecommunications official said that this aspiration reflects the government's commitment to technological development, digital inclusion, and the consolidation of the Dominican Republic's role on the global stage.
“Today, rather than launching a candidacy, we reaffirm our commitment to the future; to a digital future that is equitable, secure, and human. And from the Dominican Republic, we say with pride and conviction: we are ready to serve, to contribute, and to lead,” emphasized Gómez Mazara, after stating that the country is prepared to take on the challenge with determination and a vision for the future.

During the launch of these aspirations, held within the framework of World Telecommunication Day and the Information Society, a panel of experts was held on "Closing the digital divide in the Dominican Republic from a perspective of inclusion and equal opportunities", moderated by the journalist and member of the Board of Directors of INDOTEL, Fausto Rosario.
