Santiago.– Residents of the municipal district of Matanza, in the municipality of Puñal, denounced an alleged case of police abuse that occurred on Tuesday night, when agents allegedly assaulted violently a young man without apparent justification, according to witnesses of the event.
According to versions offered by community members, several National Police officers intercepted the young man and subjected him to violence, crashing the motorcycle he was riding and brutally beating him during the intervention.
The young man, whose identity was not revealed, was arrested and taken away in a police truck. From inside the vehicle, he reported having been injured in the mouth as a result of the blows received. “They didn't tell me why they were arresting me. They just started hitting me, as if I were a criminal,” he said with obvious distress.

The situation generated outrage among the residents of the area, who protested by throwing debris in the middle of the road as a form of repudiation of the police action. Likewise, they demanded a thorough investigation by the competent authorities and respect for the fundamental rights of citizens.
Residents stated that this type of abuse by law enforcement officers is recurrent in different areas of the province, so they requested an urgent review of police action protocols.
The main objective of the National Police in the Dominican Republic is to safeguard citizen security, prevent and control crimes, and maintain public order to protect the free exercise of people's rights and peaceful coexistence.
