Mexico City (EFE) - The Azteca Stadium, venue for the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, will be reopened with the new renovations on March 28, 2026, almost two months before the World Cup inauguration, announced this Thursday Clara Brugada, head of government of Mexico City.
"With joy we prepare to receive this global football celebration and we are ready to announce that March 28, 2026 will be the reopening of the Azteca," said Brugada, who recalled that the venue is a source of pride for Mexico because in 2026 it will be the first stadium to host the opening of three World Cup editions.
An Aztec with history, ready to shine again
"Mexico City will be the most splendid venue. As it was in 1970 with the coronation of King Pelé, with Brazil, and in '86 with the consecration of Maradona, with Argentina. This is a new opportunity to show Mexico as the center of the world," he asserted.

Brugada spoke this Wednesday at a press conference in which she detailed the public works that will be carried out to improve the public space around the Azteca and other tourist places in the capital before the World Cup that will be played from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Clara Brugada informed that the meeting point for fans, known as 'Fan Fest', will be established in the Zócalo, the main public square of the Mexican capital.
“The FIFA Fan Fest will be in the Zócalo of Mexico City and will have multiple activities for everyone, in addition, we will have soccer festivals in each of the 16 delegations of the capital so that fans can enjoy the matches,” he explained.
Security, media and more: the city surrounds the Azteca
Regarding security measures, Brugada highlighted that fans from all over the world attending the event will enjoy the most efficient video surveillance system on the continent.
"40,000 cameras have been acquired, for a total of 123,000 in the city, which makes us the most surveilled city with this technology in all of Latin America," he emphasized.
Between February and June, the FIFA World Cup trophy will tour the 16 delegations of the Mexican capital.
Brugada said that the international media center will be located in Los Pinos, a residence that was the home occupied by the country's presidents until November 2018.
In addition to the capital, Mexico will have World Cup matches in Monterrey and Guadalajara.
